Stem Cell Therapy
What is the therapeutic potential of adult stem cells?
There has been much progress in the stem cell therapy field in recent years. Many studies and commentaries have focused on the controversial use of embryonic stem cells. But what do we know of the healing possibilities of adult stem cells?
Ingrid Kuehnle and Margaret A Goodell, who are assistant professors at the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, published a paper entitled 'The therapeutic potential of stem cells from adults' in 2002. They note the discovery of adult tissue specific stem cells that can "transdifferentiate" into other tissues and how this caused a lot of excitement amongst transplant clinicians and cellbiologists. The authors identified the new research paths that would become available now that stem cell therapy would not need to rely on embryonic stem cells. Conditions suchas neurodegenerative diseases and heart and liver conditions would benefit in particular from adult stem cell therapy.
Kuehnle and Goodell highlighted strong evidence that multipotent stem cells exist in a number of adult organs and that they can be engineered for therapeutic advantage. They reviewed findings at the time on the plasticity of adult stem cells and possible directions for future research.
The authors were accurate in their high hopes for adult stem cell therapy. Since 2002 adult autologous stem cell therapy has been researched and applied all around the world. China, Mexico, and Europe are leaders in the global stem cell therapy field.
The Stem Cell Therapy Institute, incorporates a stem cell center of excellence. Adult autologous stem cell therapy of the highest standard is available here to treat a huge variety of conditions.
